The need for decent housing around the world is staggering. An estimated 2.6 billion people or two thirds of the world's population have no access to adequate sanitation in their homes. Families are trapped in a daily struggle to survive amid substandard, often inhumane conditions. Habitat for Humanity is dedicated to the idea that all people deserve a simple, decent place to live.
The high cost of housing leaves low-income families little money for other basic necessities like food, clothing or health care.
Substandard housing can endanger the health and safety of its occupants, erode their hope and self-worth, and impair their children's ability to succeed in school.
Families who have neither the capital nor the credit available to buy or rent adequate shelter are forced to live in dwellings that are unable to withstand the annual monsoons, without access to clean water or sanitation systems. Many families live in poorly ventilated shacks, built from wattle and daub or planks, and are forced to rebuild their homes annually.

Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) is a UK-based non profit-making organisation campaigning for clean, safe recreational waters, free from sewage effluents, toxic chemicals, marine litter and nuclear waste. Founded in 1990 by a group of surfers, who were literally 'sick of getting sick' through repeated ear, nose, throat and gastric infections after going in the sea.
